1997 marked a watershed moment in Turkish and international pop music history with the release of “Şımarık,” also known as “Kiss Kiss,” the iconic single by the charismatic singer Tarkan. Initially included in his album Ölürüm Sana (his third studio album), this track was written and composed by the legendary Sezen Aksu, in collaboration with Tarkan himself for the musical arrangement. “Şımarık” rapidly transcended Turkish borders, launching in France in 1998 and the rest of the world in 1999. Its impact was seismic: the song sold two million copies across Europe, becoming Tarkan’s signature song and his international “debut hit,” despite the artist having already released two albums prior to this (Yine Sensiz in 1992 and Aacayipsin in 1994). The nature of the Turkish music industry, which prioritized album releases over singles, had previously kept his global hitmaker potential under wraps. Its infectious melody and unmistakable chorus, concluding with two characteristic kissing sounds, spawned countless versions in different languages, including the famous English covers “Kiss Kiss” by Stella Soleil (2001) and Holly Valance (2002), testifying to its universal resonance.

The success of “Şımarık” wasn’t limited to music charts: the song also appeared on the soundtracks of international films such as the French Beau Travail and the American XX / XY, and was used as the theme song for the Norwegian television series Migrapolis, celebrating multiculturalism. The music video, filmed on the narrow, cobbled streets of Marseille, France, became equally iconic: Tarkan, with his unparalleled beauty and charisma, sings in the street, followed by a group of enchanted women trying to kiss him. The final scene, with Tarkan taking shelter on a street corner and kissing a little girl on the forehead, adds a touch of sweetness and innocence to a track imbued with seduction. The kissing sound effects became a popular motif, even adopted by various Chilean television programs.

Chart-wise, “Şımarık” dominated in Europe, reaching No. 1 in Belgium, No. 2 in Norway, and No. 3 in Switzerland, France, Germany, and the Netherlands. This overwhelming success was celebrated with a gold record at Cannes by Midem and in Germany by Universal, cementing Tarkan’s status as a true global Megastar. The single was released with different track listings depending on the country, including rare promotional versions that are now collector’s items, such as the French promotional CD single with the orange cover and the German limited edition with a poster.

The Provocative Message: Unconventional Love and a “Spoiled” Nature

The song “Şımarık,” which translates to “Spoiled,” explores the complex dynamic of an irresistible attraction to a female figure who challenges conventions and openly flirts with emotions, almost brazenly. Tarkan’s lyrics are imbued with intense emotions, especially jealousy, as he observes the protagonist interacting with other men.

The lyrics are enriched with Turkish idiomatic expressions that add depth and color to the portrayal of this “vicious” yet captivating figure:

“Seni gidi fındıkkıran” (“Hey, you nutcracker!”) is a colloquial expression referring to someone brazen, bold, or who dares to do something unexpected, breaking rules or social expectations.
“Yılanı deliğinden çıkaran” (“the one who pulls the snake out of its hole” or “the one who solves a difficult situation”) describes a person capable of facing and resolving complex problems or intricate situations, demonstrating cunning and courage.
“Püsküllü belam” (“my fringed problem” or “my tasseled nuisance”) is a colorful phrase that, in context, refers to a situation or person causing annoyance or trouble, but in an almost attractive way or intrinsically linked to their “decorated” or peculiar nature.

The lyrics are a confession of submission to this tumultuous attraction: “Muah! She’s walking arm in arm with another man, I’m crazy with jealousy.
