Tarkan: The Legend of Turkish Pop – From Origins to Kuantum 51

Who is Tarkan Tevetoğlu? A Journey Through the Megastar’s Life
Born in Alzey, Germany, on October 17, 1972, Tarkan Tevetoğlu is the son of Neşe and Ali Tevetoğlu, with paternal roots in the Turkish city of Rizeliler. From a very young age, music was his greatest passion. In 1986, Tarkan and his family returned to Turkey, where his interest in music transformed into studies at the Karamürsel Advanced Music Association during his high school years.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! His ascent to stardom began with humble, yet significant, steps. Tarkan, eager to let his voice be heard by the masses, performed as a singer at weddings, where even then he impressed with his interpretations of traditional Turkish songs. A fortuitous encounter with the record label Istanbul Plak saved him from thoughts of giving up, leading to the release of his first album, “Yine Sensiz”, in the early 1990s, featuring the hit “Kıl Oldum Abi“. This album marked his breakthrough into the music market, selling a total of 900,000 copies and propelling him towards success.

Ascension and Consolidation: Tarkan From Early Days to Global Success
The real test came in 1994 with his second album, “Aacayipsin”, produced with the invaluable support of Sezen Aksu. With this work, Megastar established himself among the most important names in Turkish pop, surpassing 2.5 million copies sold in Turkey and 950,000 in Europe. This album represents one of the major turning points in his career.
In 1995, the singer signed a deal with Atlantic Records, the label founded by Ahmet Ertegün and Herb Abramson. Intense media scrutiny and increasing pressure on leading artists in Turkey prompted him to move to New York, where he continued to study music and attended New York’s Baruch University. In the same year, he held a memorable concert at the Palladium in New York, broadcast live in Turkey, solidifying his status.
July 1997 saw the release of his third album, “Ölürüm Sana”, which broke all sales records with 2.5 million copies sold in Turkey alone. Also in 1997, he founded his production company, HITT Production. The following year, in 1998, Megastar participated in the 35th edition of Walt Disney, dubbing the main character of Hercules in the Turkish version of the film and singing the song “Yolumdayım”. His song “Şımarık” quickly achieved global success, being covered by other foreign artists in various languages and cementing his international fame.
Tarkan Artistic Evolution: Between Experimentation and Tradition
The new millennium opened with the single “Kuzu Kuzu” in 2001, followed by the album “Karma” in the same year. In 2003, the singer continued his musical exploration with the album “Dudu”, featuring Nazan Öncel. The album sold one million copies in Russia, earning him the award for Best Foreign Song of the Year in that country.
Driven by the desire for an English album, Megastar released the highly anticipated single “Bounce” in October 2005. This preceded the album “Come Closer”, launched across Europe and Turkey. Shortly after, he released his second English single, “Start The Fire”.
On December 23, 2007, his sixth studio album, “Metamorfoz”, was released. Tarkan wrote the lyrics for all the songs on the album and composed seven of the tracks, a sign of his growing artistic maturity. The album received Platinum certification in 2008 and Diamond certification in 2009 from MÜYAP. In 2008, “Metamorfoz” was re-released as “Metamorfoz Remixes”, a double album featuring remixed versions.
July 2010 marked the release of his seventh studio album, “Adımı Kalbine Yaz”, which sold a total of 355,000 copies. The song “Sevdanın Son Vuruşu” was announced before the album’s release (his tenth work, not the seventeenth, correction made here). “Adımı Kalbine Yaz” won the Best Album award at the King Music Awards, in the Best Song, Best Composition, and Best Lyrics categories.
On March 1, 2016, Tarkan launched his ninth studio album, “Ahde Vefa”, a significant project as it is his first art music album, a tribute to Turkish musical roots.
Collaborations and Personal Life: The Continuing Evolution of the Tarkan Phenomenon
His versatility led him to collaborate with other artists: in 2012, he performed the song “Aşk Gitti Bizden” for Ozan Çolakoğlu’s first project album “01”. In June 2013, he sang “Firuze” for the respectful album “Aysel”, commemorating Aysel Gürel, and in August 2014 “Hop De” for İskender Paydaş’s “Timeless Songs 2” album.
Tarkan married Pınar Dilek on April 29, 2016, and on July 12, 2018, the couple had a daughter named Liya.
