The 1994 Tarkan and the Illustration in “1 Numara Yayıncılık”
Let’s take a step back in time to 1994. It’s the roaring era of Aacayipsin: Tarkan is an overwhelming phenomenon with his unbuttoned shirt, magnetic charm, and unstoppable energy.During that period, the publishing house 1 Numara Yayıncılık released a special magazine entirely dedicated to Tarkan, under the editorial direction of Elif Dağıstanlı.
Among its pages, alongside official photoshoots, an artwork by illustrator Serhat Gürpınar stood out.
The drawing portrays Tarkan in all his vitality. But it is on the details where we must focus our attention: to emphasize the artist’s rhythm and agility, the illustrator placed a very specific instrument in the background… finger cymbals (zil)!
From a Simple Drawing to the Symbol of an Era (2001)
At the time, it was merely an artistic choice. But what exactly happened 7 years later, in 2001?With the release of the historic single “Kuzu Kuzu” and the launch of the album Karma, the zil (finger cymbals) became Tarkan’s official trademark—sold as iconic merchandise and worn by thousands of fans during his concerts around the world.
How is it possible that an object drawn in 1994 became, years later, the most famous identity element of the Megastar’s career?As Tarkan himself quoted during the Karma album era: “Tesadüfte tesadüf yoktur” — (There is no coincidence in coincidence).
